Starting on Dr. Seuss’s birthday week, we have done a series of lessons on one of my favorite Dr. Seuss books, “The Lorax.” This movie does a great job of giving kids access to many Environmental Education concepts that are difficult to understand – such as the long-term effects of careless waste or the importance of trees on a global level.
There are all sorts of great discussion questions brought up as early as the very first opening song (the ending song is great too!). Although I have not yet published the rest of my lesson plans, here is a list of the clips that we watch in class and a packet of thought-provoking writing prompts inspired by the song “Thneedville” in the movie “The Lorax.”
00:00 – 8:00 / Learn about Thneedville and their fake trees
17:00 – 27:30 / Part 1 of the Onceler’s story
39:00 – 46:00 / Part 2 of the Onceler’s story
48:00 – 53:30 / Part 3 of the Onceler’s story
57:10 – 59:00 / Lorax visits the Onceler after he cuts down all of the trees
1:01:50 – 1:03:25 / The last Truffula seed
1:12:30 – 1:21:00 / Chase for the last Truffula seed
