Garden Update: Harvesting Our Greens
It’s about one month after we planted our seedlings in the garden and they are ready to harvest! We used some for a taste test and sent some to Murphy’s Restaurant for our Harvest Party and Fall Fundraiser.
Book Reviews: Soil
Scary Creatures of the Soil is just one in a series of “Scary Creature” books. The kids loved looking through this one on Halloween and reviewing what we’ve learned in past lessons about soil. There are chapters about beetles burying their dead, spiders ambushing their prey, and everyone’s favorite – “What Feeds Poop to itsContinue reading “Book Reviews: Soil”
Home-School Connection: Virginia and Annie’s Sweet Potato
Virginia and Annie grew this sweet potato in their own backyard! So neat!
Classroom Connection: Ms. Berry’s Noun Activity
Ms. Berry’s class is using the context of a farm to review collective nouns! Check out this awesome website she found: http://www.purposegames.com/game/1323 I love that she is using a real-life example that is as universal as growing food to review a language arts concept!
Garden Update: Seedlings
Thank you to Nicolas from Crystal Organics for all of the beautiful seedlings for our rooftop garden!
Grant Update: Butterfly Garden
We were fortunate enough to receive a grant from the Council of Outdoor Learning (an initiative of the Environmental Education Alliance of Georgia) to build a butterfly garden on our rooftop outdoor space. With the help of Caroline from Riggins Landscape, we were able to pick the perfect plants for our space! We can’t wait toContinue reading “Grant Update: Butterfly Garden”

Label your strip with the name of the seed you will plant. Review the seed packet to decide how far apart seeds should be placed. Make a mark onContinue reading “Math Lesson: Measuring with Seed Tapes”
Garden Update: Herbs!
This week we planted tons of different herbs in the garden! Here’s just a few: Rosemary adds flavor to bread, butter, jam, meat, vegetables and stews. Oregano is a Mediterranean herb that is often used in Greek as well as Mexican cuisine. It goes well with sausage and tomatoes as well as other meats and vegetables. Thyme hasContinue reading “Garden Update: Herbs!”
Tasting with Chef Andrew: Okra Fritters
On Monday, Chef Andrew from Atkins Park came by to teach our fourth and fifth graders about cooking with okra. Students have been growing okra in the garden and were able to pick okra before we started our lesson. They learned that okra is high in Vitamin C, Vitamin K, and folate and learned howContinue reading “Tasting with Chef Andrew: Okra Fritters”
